GHIN Regional Workshops September and October 2008

GHIN concentrated epidemics workshop: London, 22-24 September

The GHIN concentrated epidemics workshop was held in London, from 22nd to 24th October. Participants included country research teams from China, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Peru and Ukraine. The workshop was organised by GHIN coordinators in LSHTM, supported by coordinators from RCSI and focused on a number of areas including:

  • Updates from teams on study progress and future research plans
  • Presentation of emerging study findings
  • Presentations from LSHTM researchers on HIV programmes and services in Serbia and Russia
  • Exploration of cross-cutting themes using analytical frameworks
  • Planning outputs (country and cross-country) and drafting policy briefs
  • Reviewing next steps for GHIN including meeting(s) in 2009

GHIN African Regional Workshop: Maputo, 13-16 October

This four day workshop was held in Maputo, Mozambique and was hosted by the Dept of Community Health, Faculty of Medicine, Eduardo Mondlane University. The workshop was attended by teams from Angola, Lesotho, Mozambique, Tanzania, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, Ireland, Belgium, and the UK. The aims of the workshop included:

  • Updates from teams on study progress and future research plans
  • Sharing lessons learned from research processes and methods
  • Capturing emerging issues and examples from country studies
  • Exploring cross-cutting themes using analytical frameworks
  • Disseminating preliminary research findings to stakeholders and colleagues
  • Debating policy implications of preliminary findings and the needs of stakeholders within sub-Saharan Africa in relation to 2009 research priorities, advocacy and dissemination
  • Advancement of the global level research into global stakeholders’ perspectives of the impact of GHIs on the architecture of development partnerships and national-level health systems.
  • Planning outputs and discussing policy briefs
  • Reviewing next steps for GHIN in 2009 and beyond.
  • Discussing strategies for linking into similar initiatives such as the Maximising Positive Synergies between Health Systems and GHIs Consortium.

As part of the workshop, a one day regional stakeholder dissemination meeting was held to disseminate early research findings from: Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia, as well as emerging GHIN cross-cutting findings. This special session was attended by representatives from Ministries of Health, SADC, WHO and WHO Afro and donors.
